Skip the Socks: Why a Night Under Canvas Is the Gift They'll Actually Talk About

Let's be honest about how gift-giving usually goes. You spend £30 on something scented. They smile, say it's lovely, and it joins a small graveyard of other lovely things on a shelf somewhere. By February, neither of you remembers what it was.

We'd like to propose a radical alternative: give someone a night in a tipi. Not a thing — a time. Preferably one involving a fire pit, a sky full of stars and absolutely nothing to scroll.

Why Experiences Win (Every Single Time)

The research on this is fairly settled, but you don't need a study to know it. Nobody reminisces about the gift set they got in 2022. They do talk, for years, about the time they watched the sun come up from a deckchair in the Peak District with a mug of tea and a woolly hat still on.

Experiences stick because they become part of someone's story rather than part of their stuff. And a night under canvas is a particularly good story: it's a little bit adventurous, very photogenic, and — unlike a spa day — it comes with campfire pudding.

The Gift for the Person Who Has Everything

We all have one. The parent who buys themselves whatever they need, the friend whose birthday is a genuine tactical challenge. Here's the trick: the harder someone is to buy things for, the better an experience gift lands.

A tipi escape works because it's not really about the tipi. It's about giving a couple a reason to leave their phones behind. Giving a tired parent a night where someone else has built the fire. Giving your most stressed mate 48 hours where the loudest sound is rain on canvas — which, if you've read our feelings on the matter, beats any spa day going.

How to Actually Gift It

Gift vouchers are your friend. Most glamping sites — ours included — offer them, and they solve the date problem neatly: the recipient books when it suits them, which matters when you're gifting to people with school runs, shift patterns or chaotic lives. Print the voucher, wrap it with a pair of proper wool socks and a bag of marshmallows, and you've got a present with a theme.

For milestone birthdays and anniversaries, think bigger. A group booking — six tipis, one field, a whole weekend — turns a 40th or a golden anniversary into the kind of gathering people bring up at every subsequent dinner party. Book well ahead for summer dates; the good weekends go fast.

For Christmas, lean into the anticipation. A tipi escape gifted in December is a promise of summer sitting on the mantelpiece. There's something lovely about unwrapping a night under canvas while the rain hammers the windows — it's hope, in gift form.

Making It Feel Thoughtful (Not Lazy)

The difference between a thoughtful experience gift and a lazy one is the framing. Don't just hand over a voucher code. Add the details:

You're not just giving a night away — you're giving the whole weekend, start to finish.

The Honest Pitch

Stuff depreciates. A candle burns down, a scarf gets lost, a gadget gets superseded. A night in a tipi appreciates, oddly — the longer it sits in the memory, the better it gets, until it becomes one of those stories told slightly better each year.

So this birthday, this anniversary, this Christmas: skip the socks. Give them the field, the fire and the stars. It's the present they'll actually remember — and honestly, the one you'll wish you'd kept for yourself.
